面積は238万平方キロメートル（内、砂漠地帯約200万平方キロメートル）（アフリカ第1位）。人口は4,390万人（2020年5月）。公用語はアラビア語。その他ベルベル語、フランス語。首都はアルジェ。1962年にフランスから独立。

宗教・民族・人種

イスラム教（スンニ派）。アラブ人（74％）、ベルベル人（25％）、その他（1％）。

政治・経済

共和制。1962年、7年以上に及ぶ対フランス戦争を経て独立。
一人当たりのGDPは3638ドル(2021年、IMF)。原油・天然ガスの輸出が経済を支えており、輸出総額の93％（2022年、世界銀行）を占めている。
